Organic farming may be defined as an integrated farming system that strives for sustainability, the enhancement of soil fertility, biological diversity with rare exceptions prohibiting synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, and genetically modified organisms & growth hormones. Organic farming is an alternate agricultural system which relies on fertilizers of organic origin such as manure, compost and bone meal. Organic farming places emphasis on techniques like crop rotation and companion planting and encourages biological pest control, mixed cropping and the fostering of insect predators. In general, organic standards are designed to allow the use of naturally occurring substances while strictly limiting or prohibiting the use of synthetic substances. Naturally occurring pesticides such as pyrethrin and rotenone are permitted, whereas synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are prohibited in general. Synthetic substances that are allowed include elemental sulphur, copper sulfate and Ivermectin. Genetically modified organisms, nano materials, plant growth regulators, hormones, human sewage sludge and use in livestock husbandry are prohibited. Motives for promoting organic farming include real or perceived advantages in autonomy/independence, self-sufficiency, sustainability openness, health, food security and food safety. Organic agricultural methods are internationally regulated and legally enforced by many nations on the standards set by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM), an international umbrella organization established in 1972.
